Friday Night Roller Diva
Friday night. A room full of kids. Loud music. Disco balls and laser light beams cutting through the darkness. “Oh Sheila” is the tune we are all singing along to. Ok, all of the adults were signing along to it. Surrounded by the scent of used rollers skates and over priced snack bar food.
As I begin to lace up my four-wheeled, old school roller skates, the adrenalin began to flow.
Suddenly I was transported to 1984. I was wearing my favorite, yellow, Smurfette shirt and Sasson jeans. I had my lucky skates with me, the ones I used my skate key on before slipping them on my feet. The ones that had traveled to Great Skate with me within their very own cushioned skate case. My hair hung free, long past my ass cheeks as I sped past the boys, flirting all the while. Yes, I was a roller diva in my time.
This past Friday night I got to be a roller diva all over again! It’s kind of like riding a bike, you don’t really forget how to do it. The only thing you forget is that roller skating takes more leg muscle than I have been used to using for any reason over the past 22 years. It didn’t take long for me to get back into the swing of the rush of wind through my hair, the music flowing through my veins and the feel of the roller rink coming at me at 100 mph as I land on my ass after locking wheels with another skater. Ahhh! Memories!
It was also in this exact Great Skate location that I got my very first kiss from a boy. Yup, that’s right. 22 years ago. He was a year older than me and he kissed me on my cheek while we couples skated; I skating backwards because the boys weren’t so good at it then. Actually, not much has changed because the boys still aren’t very good at backwards skating.
The surprising part of the whole evening was that I didn’t get winded once in the two and a half hours I skated with the kids! I just can’t believe it! Not smoking has improved so many things for me! It was fantastic to be able to roller skate with my children almost non stop for that amount of time without getting tired from lack of oxygen or stopping to go outside every so often for a cigarette. It felt soo good to get that amount of exercise and not cough uncontrollably when I was finished. It felt good, being out there on the floor as if I were a pre-teen all over again! I can’t wait for the next family skate night!
Too bad I forgot to bring the camera so that y’all could see lil’ ol’ me in roller skates! bwahahahahaha!

omg you are still a nonsmoker! You must be in pretty damn good shape to not get winded for 2 1/2 hours. You know, they now have roller derby teams for women, can you imagine? I could totally see you kicking ass doing something like that.
