Safety Nets

They aren’t always as secure as we imagine them. Most times, they are barely wavering in the wind, using the “bend” tactic to remain in one piece rather than fighting off danger with firmness. A firm stand just might break them through and cause you to fall down.

And it happens.

Sometimes in life, your safety net is ripped from beneath you in such a sudden fashion that the wind is literally knocked from your body and remains out of reach for quite a spell. I think, as humans, we come to rely too much on our chosen safety nets. We think them unmovable; unbreakable by time or force. Unfortunately, that’s just not true. I have experienced several times that my safety net has completely dropped me on my ass. Bruised and broken, I stand, out of breath and hurt wondering what the hell just happened. No forewarning. No time to prepare. Pieces of my life just seem to scatter before me like glass beneath the sun’s rays. Each piece catches the light and glitters brightly making that one piece look like a million all in its own right.

I look desperately for my safety net. Utterly confused on where it went, how it broke, and feeling lost on what in the world am I going to do next.

Then, amazing things begin to happen. Amazing, because if you’re anything like me, you have friends like mine, and you will or have seen it too. Those pieces begin coming together. Bit by bit, little by little, creating a new kind of safety net, one built by hands and hearts. A safety net that is cleaning up the mess and soothing the heart. The kind of safety net that never breaks. The one that is there in the middle of the night when the night terrors shake you awake. The kind that no matter how many times you call, they answer ready to give you exactly the support you need without you having to even open your mouth. The one you never question its strength, as it is always just there. The one who makes you laugh when tears are all that want to come out. The safety net that, even when you are not strong enough, is strong enough for you; feeds your kids, provides beds and a peaceful place to lay your head. It’s a magical thing, the occurrence of such a miraculous set of circumstances and one that is guided by God’s hand and faith.

And humility.

Upon the destruction of ones safety net, one must become humble enough to ask for help. To let those around them know that they need help.

That is the hardest thing a person can do. Admit that they need help.

I am a very lucky woman.  I love you. My safety net. Entwined, holding me together, you are sent from God.

I love my safety nets.  They are always found in the hands of true friendship.

I’m so happy you have help rebuilding your safety net.  The way it should be built, with hands and heart.

    Love you, girl!
