Thursdays are a hairy day for me, mostly because I have to drive home from work at noon to pick up my little Bean and bring her back to work with me. Yesterday, however, was the most interesting of hairy Thursdays we’ve ever experienced!

It happened after I’d picked up Bean and we’d returned to work. We were heading back into the office when something moving on the sidewalk before us caught our eye. It was a little baby bird, that had fallen from it’s nest. It had some feathers and wasn’t just hatched, but was small none the less. It was wallowing, on its back, in a small puddle of water on the cement. Bean and I went inside and told the girls about what we saw.

One of my co-workers went running out, determined she was going to save this little bird. We all searched the tree tops within the courtyard for the nest. Once we located it, we went about trying to figure out how to get the bird back in its nest, where it belonged. That’s when my co-worker picked up the little bird and began drying it off, and warming it up, with a paper towel. Another co-worker grabbed a step stool and we all headed outside with compassionate determination to put that bird back. Only one problem. There was no way we were going to reach that nest on that tiny little step stool.

We decided to call the building maintenance guy and ask him if he had a 10 foot ladder to use to replace the bird. We explained the situation to him and he agreed to come out and do it. In 45 minutes, that is. What to do with the bird while we waited? My co-worker was worried that the air conditioning inside of the office would be too cold for the little guy, who was later named “Bernard”, so she began to hide him under her shirt. He wouldn’t stay there very well, so I suggested that she not put him under by her belly, but rather, put him in her bosom. He would rest there, keep warm, and be safe and hidden until we could get him back home.

So, she did.

And there, Bernard dried off, and began to warm up. He started showing signs of life, giving us hope that all would soon be right in his little world. Just then, the maintenance guy showed up. Bernard’s knight with a shiny 10 food ladder. She turned Bernard over, and he went about putting him back in his nest.

We were all so pleased with ourselves. It was actually mostly the co-worker with the nerve enough to a) pick it up (bare handed) and b) carry it around in her bosom in an effort to save its little life. That’s awesome.

Sadly, because of the thunderstorms we had last night, or the fact that the mother had pushed him out to begin with and did it again - or he simply jumped, we found him on he ground again this morning. The maintenance guy was there, doing his morning routine, and we told him of our discovery. We all kind of just looked at him, and sighed.

I am not sure what became of Bernard today. I know, when I returned from the rest room, he was gone again. I do hope that maybe he was put back one more time. I am not sure I truly want to know.

I do know that I will always think of him fondly when we retell the story of the bird in the bosom through breathless giggles. Maybe we couldn’t save his life, but his short life meant something to five credit union ladies and one Bean!
