Check out the Deer Valley Threshers!
Usually, you will find one parent or the other at football practices. Even still, not all of the children even have a parent that is able to stay, but on Friday nights, it’s different. Friday nights have been designated Family night at TB’s practices because nobody has to wake up early the next morning. So, my girlfriend and her family (her daughter is my son’s girlfriend) and my entire family meet at the field for a night of pee-wee’s knocking each other around, parents mingling on the side lines, and cheerleaders keeping everyone’s spirits up. I really look forward to Friday nights, now.
10 years ago and longer, Friday nights were for partying, clubbing, drinking, hanging out with good friends and causing trouble. It’s funny how much things have changed. Yet, I look forward to these Friday nights as much as I did in the past. No, more, actually.
It’s so freakin’ cool to watch my son out there on the field. He knocks the snot out of the offensive players when he’s on defense. Drops them like a box of rocks. That’s my boy! On offense, he’s the fastest kid on the team, as well as one of the biggest, and is virtually unstoppable. What I wouldn’t do for a video recorder right now. OMG, it’s so much fun! And not just for the parents watching their kids out on the field.
Siblings. They are a huge part of a child’s life and when they feel apart of each others activities, it creates life long bonds. I basically have 6 kids, as my girlfriend’s babies are dear to my heart, so the children get the benefit of having a great big personal cheering section! We take turns beaming with pride at our little cheerleader, Froggie (her nickname) and our star football player, TB. The siblings of the cheerleaders and football players become friends. They run around imitating their brothers and sisters. You see pint sized 3 year old boys playing tackle football on the side lines. You see future cheerleaders copying the motions of their older sisters. And unfortunately, sometimes, parents behaving badly. Yet, nothing really seems to put a damper on the evening. There can be drama erupting from all sides, and people really seem to remain calm and find a way to giggle in spite of the messes. I really enjoy the energy of the whole thing.
This week we are frantically starting fund raisers, jumping in head first to bring in enough funds to buy their game jerseys. I haven’t had any luck yet with **sponsors, even with the promise of a great 8x10 plaque with the teams picture on it! It’s a measly $150 and you’d think I was asking for a million dollars. If I can scrape some up, you would think others could too. But, the upside is that folks are buying the cookie dough and pizzas we’ve sold so far. I was shocked to see just how many we sold even in the first day!
One more week of practices every day and we move on to twice a week, I believe. I can’t say that I’m not looking forward to that because I sooo am. As much as I’ve been enjoying these practices, it’s taking it’s toll on me. The late nights, and early mornings to work. Getting off work only to slam together the fastest 30 minute meal you’ve ever seen, digest our dinners for 30 minutes and then TB and I pile into the car and run to practice for the next two hours. After that, it’s back home to try and get some sleep before doing it all again the next day. I like being on the run, I thrive on being busy, but in my old age it is nice to break it up a bit at times.
Soon games are going to be starting and I can’t wait to see my son out there, giving it his all, knockin’ some kids around and doing a jig in the end zone! It will happen! And I will tell you all about it!
I am definitely not a soccer mom.
We are unmistakeably a football family!
