Friend or Foe?

You’re in a deep sleep, and suddenly from the other room you hear a small voice cry out, “Mom, I need help!”.........That will wake you up in a hurry! My poor guy was sick to his stomach. That’s starting the day on the right foot isn’t it? The very last day of the school year. The last day I did not have to worry about babysitting for the older kids. Now, he’s home for the day, and I have to come up with a sitter. It’s a good thing I have wonderful people around me to fall back on in emergencies with the kids.I don’t have a large circle of friends. I don’t have a phone number book that’s an inch thick. I have really literally one friend. She’s the best friend anyone could ask for, and the only friend anyone would need. Then there is my family. They’ve been there for me through it all, taking care of my kids so they don’t have to stay with strangers. Saving me money at the same time. Anytime I need them, they are there. Today is going to be one of those days. No body knows it yet, but, I think mom is going to have an extra body around today. What do you need a gaggle of friends around for when you’ve got the best people around you in a mere handful?God has blessed me greatly.I would much rather have one or two people that I know I could fall back on anytime, for any reason, than have a hundred “friends” and no one that you can rely on. That’s a hard one these days. Being able to rely on anyone. To trust them. To know that they will do what they say they are going to do. So selfish is the world today. So much so, that friendship has a strange new meaning. One I’ve not spent a whole lot of time exploring because I don’t waste time with “friends” like that. Life is too short. I wasted enough time, 2 years to be exact, on a “friend”. This was one of those friends that was your twin, the one that you are joined at the hip with. Or, so I thought. She stuck around long enough to milk me for everything, literally. She lived with me. I didn’t want a room mate to move in a week after buying my new house. But, she needed me, she needed help and I opened up my home. After taking advantage, being unreliable and eventually falling into the role of “liar” one day out of nowhere, she flipped, showed up with some unknown person while nobody was at home, cleaned everything out (even stuff that wasn’t hers) and left town. That was it. Never to be heard from again. No phone call, no note, no nothing. Simply a lot of bad feelings and burned bridges...Michelle, who? That’s what people call friendship these days? Who needs it!If that is how we treat our best friends, no wonder the country has so many enemies. We’ve forgotten, as a whole, what honor, respect, and loyalty mean. Sure, we could recite the text book definitions, but that isn’t the same as knowing what those words mean by living the definitions, not just reciting them.I would rather have one friend I can count on, than a thousand friends who wouldn’t take the time to spit on me if I were on fire.
