Working in a position where I am in contact with such a wide range of people can be quite an amusing place to be. Especially in this day and age. Most of the humorous moments tend to float around the technological side of life when mixed with folks from say, my grandmother’s generation.

Ya gotta give these old jacks credit. They started out with nary a television set, and suddenly they are trying to navigate their way through this new world while at the same time navigating their way through dementia as well. Which, from my stand point deserves kudos but also provides for some humorous moments.

Take yesterday for an example. An older member had passed away a few months ago, leaving her son to tidy up the loose ends, including the car loan that she had with us. He, himself, is no spring chicken, and he’s had quite a time of figuring out how to transfer information to us via the technological devices that are at his disposal, keeping him from having to drive all the way to the credit union. He finally got the hang of the fax machine, tho, and was able to just about complete what he needed to do with us.

The only thing left was for him to get to us the pay off for the vehicle. Here is where the poor guy got confused.

He’d called, asking for our mailing address, therefore causing us to assume he was just going to mail the pay off. Then, the phone rang again, and it was him, asking if he could just fax us the payoff since it would be faster than the USPS, and he could have the title right away.

cool hmm

No, for real. He was serious and couldn’t understand why he couldn’t just fax it in right now. You probably could imagine the uproar of giggles that came when the phone call ended and we were told what he was dead set on doing in order to get the payment to us. Fax it in. Wow. On one hand, I do not believe that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. But, at the same time, learning when to use what trick at what time is a totally different story!

The earnestness in which he spoke about faxing in the payment was nearly just as funny. Not in a “make of” him way of funny, but funny none the less.

Navigating our world today has got to be confusing, and somewhat terrifying, for some of those older folks. When they finally figure something out, they are adorable in their sense of accomplishment, even if they are going about it the wrong way!
